YC3/Week 7/Lesson 37

Dear Young Child 3 Parent:

This week’s lesson introduced music of the African-American heritage—music that has been passed down from the first Africans who came to North America. Today the children learned “I Got a Letter This Morning,” a spiritual, or type of hymn that usually tells a story. Kindermusik often uses traditional songs such as this to introduce or reinforce music concepts; in this case, the emphasis was on note recognition.

Through exposure to many types of music including original compositions, 20th century pieces, traditional classical works, etc. the children come to recognize that music has long-lasting importance to people and that music can reach each of us in different ways.
